The redesign of Veterans Park at the southeast corner of Deerpath & Green Bay Road is set to begin as early as October 8, 2021. This project has been in the works since 2017, and the design will be a vibrant, welcoming, open space including a veteran’s memorial monument in the center of the park. The City of Lake Forest and local American Legion McKinlock Post 264 worked together to bring this redesign to reality through community visioning sessions in 2017 & 2019.
"Our American Legion Post is proud to be working with the City of Lake Forest on the new Veterans Park,” said Ed Geraghty, of American Legion McKinlock Post 264. “The park will have a memorial that honors the memory of the veterans from Lake Forest who gave their lives for our country. This memorial is way past due.”
The City of Lake Forest acquired the property in 2016 through a land swap with Lake Forest Open Lands. Public input was sought, and through the process, a final design was approved that met the needs of the community, with a true Veterans Park. The park will be a place that veterans can enjoy, reflect, and call home.
The reopening and dedication of the park is being planned for Memorial Day weekend 2022 with the dedication of the monument later that year.
